CSA Winter Hawaiian Seminar

With record participation, the CSA hosted 513 attendees at this year’s Winter Hawaiian Seminar, January 23-27. Participants came from 46 states and 8 countries to spend a week in paradise at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa. World-class faculty put on an excellent week of CME, led by Program Chair Michael Gropper, M.D., Ph.D. Aside from completing 20 CME credits, many attendees brought family with them and participated in a range of athletics, activities and tours on the island—the whale watching was particularly spectacular!

First Annual CSA CA-3 Resident Conference

By Samuel Wald, M.D.

On Saturday January 7, 2012, the California Society of Anesthesiologists hosted the First Annual CA-3 Conference. For the past three years, the CSA has sponsored an annual conference for the California Program Directors and this led to the idea of having a California Chief Resident Conference, which occurred in the fall of 2011 in coordination with the September board meeting. The Chief Residents thought it would be useful for all CA-3 residents to have the opportunity to attend a CSA Board Meeting and also to meet separately to discuss the transition from residency to practice.

The conference was held in parallel with the January meeting of the CSA Board of Directors and included approximately 30 senior anesthesiology residents from almost every program in California. Gary Levin, M.D., MBA started the day off with an enlightening and interactive financial planning session, where participants reviewed their own future financial health and strategy. This was followed by lunch with the entire Board of Directors and lectures on coordinating CSA efforts with other organization such as the Alzheimer’s Association.

In the afternoon, Michael Champeau, M.D. gave a wonderful series of lectures on understanding anesthesia billing and some of the barriers that the specialty may face in the future. As part of this past board meeting, the members were considering various new logo possibilities for the CSA. The CA-3s were extremely helpful in sharing their ideas and giving some direction to what the next generation of anesthesiologists sees as a good match for the CSA.

The day ended with a panel of academic, private practice and sub-specialty anesthesiologists providing advice for interviews and how to succeed in practice. The session was extremely engaging, and both the seasoned anesthesiologists in the room and the soon-to-be graduates took away a great deal from the experience. Many thanks to the CSA for sponsoring the event and to those who participated in making it a great success!
